titleOfInvention | Formaldehyde/chloral copolymers |
abstract | A homogeneous copolymer of formaldehyde and chloral which has the general formula <FORM:0995770/C3/1> where the ratio of x : z is from 99 : 1 to 5 : 95 and x may be at least 3. The copolymer may contain at least 45% chlorine and may be produced by polymerizing formaldehyde and chloral in a liquid hydrocarbon, e.g. pentane or toluene, at -116 DEG to 50 DEG C. in the presence of an initiator, e.g. amines, phosphines, arsines, stibines, metal carbonyls, quaternary ammonium or phosphonium salts or tert.-sulphonium salts. The copolymer may be acetylated, e.g. using acetic anhydride and pyridine. The copolymer may be shaped into films or fibres. |
