titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of coloured extruded shaped products such as filaments and films
abstract 995,490. Spun dyed artificial filaments and films. BRITISH CELLOPHANE Ltd. Feb. 4, 1963 [Feb. 26, 1962], No. 7467/62. Heading B5B. Coloured shaped products such as filaments and films are produced by dispersing a vat dyestuff in an aqueous solution or dispersion of a filament- or film-forming substance, extruding the dispersion into a coagulating bath to form a shaped coagulated product such as a filament or film, treating the coagulated product with an aqueous solution of a reducing agent, heating the treated coagulated product while wet with this solution in an oxygen-free atmosphere at above 60‹ C., preferably above 90‹ C. to reduce the vat dyestuff dispersed in the product to its leuco form and subsequently subjecting the product to oxidizing conditions to oxidize the leuco form to the original vat dyestuff. The treated product may be heated by passage through an atmosphere of steam. It may be treated in a bath of the aqueous solution of the reducing agent at a temperature not exceeding 30‹ C. The reducing agent may be sodium hydrosulphite and the product may be treated with an aqueous solution of this agent rendered alkaline by the addition of sodium hydroxide. Alternatively, the shaped product may be treated with an alkaline aqueous solution of sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate. The shaped product may be subjected to oxidizing conditions in a bleach bath. The aqueous solution of the filament or filament-forming substance may be viscose or an aqueous solution of a cellulose derivative other than cellulose xanthate, or if an alginate, a starch product, a vinyl compound, polyacrylonitrile or a protein. The shaped product may be a film or filaments of regenerated cellulose.
