titleOfInvention A process for the isomerization of alkyl aromatics
abstract C8-C10 Alkyl-benzene hydrocarbons having at least one C1-C3 alkyl group are isomerized by contacting under vapour phase isomerization conditions at 550-950 DEG F. in the presence of free hydrogen with a catalyst consisting of alumina, 0.05-2 weight per cent of boria and 0.05-2 weight per cent of a Group VIII metal. Pressures of 50-2000 p.s.i.g., weight hourly space velocities of 0.25-50 and hydrogens to alkyl aromatic molar ratios of 1 to 20:1 are specified. The isomarization of xylene, ethylbenzene and tetramethylbenzene feedstocks is exemplified.ALSO:An alkyl-benzene isomerization catalyst consists of an alumina carrier with 0,5-20 weight per cent of baria and 0,05-2 weight per cent of a platinum group metal. The alumina base may be obtained by calcining a hydrous alumina containing 65-95% trihydrate which has a surface area of 350-550 square metres/gram. Specification 735,390 and U.S.A. Specification 2,838,445 are referred to.
