titleOfInvention | Improvements in the purification of alpha-olefin polymers |
abstract | Catalyst residues of vanadium and organo-aluminium compounds contained in an alphaolefin hydrocarbon copolymer are removed from a solution of the copolymer by mixing the solution at a temperature between 0 DEG and 200 DEG C. for no more than one minute under conditions of high shear agitation with sufficient of an aqueous mineral acid solution containing 0.01 to 0.8% acid by weight to give a ratio of equivalents of acid to total gram atoms of vanadium and aluminium of at least 1: 1, and separating the resulting aqueous phase containing the catalyst residue from the copolymer solution. The other monomeric unit in the copolymer may be derived from another alpha-olefin or an olefin containing more than one carbon-carbon double bond. The Specification contains long lists of copolymers and catalyst components. Exemplified copolymers are of ethylene/propylene/and 1,4-hexadiene. The catalyst residues in these copolymers is derived from diisobutyl aluminium monochloride and vanadium oxytrichloride. The solvents may be hydrocarbons or halogenated hydrocarbons. |
