titleOfInvention | Preparation of polymerization catalyst |
abstract | 2-Alkyl substituted conjugated diolefins are polymerized to form high cis-1,4 addition polymers using a catalyst formed by contacting titanium tetrachloride with an aluminium trialkyl or aluminium trialkyl etherate in a controlled manner such that the Al/Ti molar ratio at no time exceeds 1.2/1, whilst the Al/Ti molar ratio in the final catalyst lies between 0.8/1 and 1.2/1 A number of suitable aluminium trialkyls and aluminium trialkyl etherates are listed. In the examples isoprene and 2-ethyl-1,3-butadiene are homopolymerized in heptane solution, the catalyst comprising aluminium triisobutyl and titanium tetrachloride, and the reaction is terminated with isopropyl alcohol. Other monomers specified are 2-isopropyl-1,3-butadiene and 2-methyl-1,3-pentadiene. The polymerization may be effected in bulk. |
