abstract | 6-Demethyltetracyclines are produced by cultivating a tetracycline-producing strain of Streptomyces aureofaciens or Streptomyces viridifaciens in an aqueous nutrient medium under aerobic conditions in the presence of a sulphonamide compound. 6-Demethyltetracycline is produced if the nutrient medium is substantially free of available chloride ions and 7-chloro-6-demethyltetracyclin if the nutrient medium contains available chloride ions. The Specification lists a number of suitable sulphonamide compounds of which the following are used in examples: sulphaquanidine, sulphadiazine, sulphathiazole, sulphapyridine, succinyl sulphathiazole and sulphisoxazole.
