titleOfInvention Process for the production of polychloropyridines
abstract Polychloropyridines are prepared by reacting a mono- or polychloro-2-(trichloromethyl)-pyridine with excess chlorine at elevated temperature. The -CCl3 group is replaced by a chloro radical with a carbon tetrachloride as by-product, and nuclear hydrogen may be replaced by chlorine with hydrogen chloride as by-product. The process may be in the liquid or vapour phase and temperatures up to 250 DEG C. or over may be used, with ultra-violet irradiation. Examples describe the preparation of 2,3,5,6 - tetracxloropyridine from 3,5 - dichloro - 2 - (trichloromethyl) pyridine, 2,3,5-trichloro-6-(trichloromethyl) pyridine, and a mixed chloro-(trichloromethyl) pyridine composition; pentachloropyridine from 3,4,5-trichloro-2-(trichloromethyl) pyridine and 2,3,4,5-tetrachloro - 6 - (trichloromethyl) pyridine; 2,3,4,5 - tetrachloropyridine from 3,4,5 - trichloro - 2 - (trichloromethyl) pyridine; 2,3,5,6-tetrachloropyridine and pentachloropyridine from 3,5-dichloro-2-(trichloromethyl) pyridine; a polychloropyridine composition from 2,3-dichloro-6-(trichloromethyl) pyridine, and from mixed 2-(trichloromethyl) pyridines and chloropyridines; tetrachloropyridine and pentachloropyridine composition from dichloro-2-(trichloromethyl) pyridine composition.
