titleOfInvention Preparation of amine oxides
abstract Tertiary amine oxides are prepared by reacting under agitation a tertiary aliphatic amine of the formula R1R2R3N wherein R1 and R2 are each a methyl or ethyl radical and R3 is a C10-20 alkyl radical, with an aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution containing at least 20% of hydrogen peroxide by weight at a temperature within the range 40 DEG to 80 DEG C. until substantially complete conversion of said amine to its oxide has been effected, and during the course of said reaction diluting the reaction mixture with water as required to permit effective agitation of said reaction mixture. During the latter stages of the reaction the water used as diluent may be replaced by water containing a water-soluble alcohol.
