titleOfInvention | N-substituted-1-phenyl-2-aminoalkanes |
abstract | The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0989033/C2/1> (wherein R represents an alkyl group of not more than 4 carbon atoms and R1 and R2 each represent a phenyl or an alkyl substituted phenyl group, the alkyl group having not more than 4 carbon atoms); and a process for the preparation of compounds of the formula <FORM:0989033/C2/2> (wherein X and X1 each represent a hydrogen atom or together represent a single bond between the carbon atoms to which they are attached) in which a 1-phenyl-2-aminoalkane is reacted with an aldehyde of the formula <FORM:0989033/C2/3> and the azomethine bond of the resulting compound of the formula <FORM:0989033/C2/4> is reduced to give a compound of the Formula II wherein X and X1 represent a double bond which may be optionally reduced to give a compound of the Formula II wherein X and X1 represent hydrogen atoms. The azomethine bond is preferably reduced with sodium-borohydride and the double bond, when present in compounds of the Formula II with hydrogen and Raney nickel. Aldehydes of the Formula III may be prepared by reaction of a ketone of the formula R1-CO-R2 with acetylene in the presence of a condensing agent to give an acetylenic alcohol of the formula <FORM:0989033/C2/5> which is isomerized to the desired aldehyde by treatment with an acid. |
