titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of aliphatic, olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids
abstract Aliphatic olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides thereof are prepared by contacting an olefinic hydrocarbon having 4 carbon atoms in a straight chain and molecular oxygen at a raised temperature with a catalyst comprising vanadium pentoxide, phosphoric acid and an inorganic carrier, which has an increasing activity in the direction of flow of the gas mixture. To effect this the phosphoric acid to vanadium pentoxide ratio in the catalyst may be decreased in the direction of flow or the gases may be passed through two or more layers of catalyst, the second and following layers having a higher activity than the previous ones. The preferred temperatures for carrying out the process one in the range 350-550 DEG C. and the preferred carrier is kieselguhr. Suitable starting materials are, for example, butene-1, cis-butene-2, trans-butene-2 and butadiene which are oxidized to maleic acid or 2-methyl-butene-2 which is oxidized to citraconic acid. The anhydrides are obtained if the products are cooled directly or washed with an organic solvent.
