abstract | 1,4-Cyclohexanedimethanol is prepared by hydrogenating a dialkyl terephthalate in presence of a palladium catalyst in a first stage (giving apparently the dialkyl 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) and hydrogenating in a second stage the effluent from the first stage in presence of copper chromite catalyst. Minor products present include methyl (or n-butyl) 4-hydroxymethylcyclohexanecarboxylate, 4 - methoxymethyl (or n-butoxymethyl) cyclohexanemethanol and 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol.
