titleOfInvention Epoxy compounds and flame-retardant resins therefrom
abstract An epoxy compound, containing at least 12% by weight of bromine and hardenable with a curing agent to a flame-retardant product, is formed by reacting, preferably in presence of a catalyst which may be a tertiary amine, an epoxide, having more than one terminal epoxy group per molecule and which may or may not contain bromine or chlorine, with sufficient 4,41-isopropylidene bis-(2,6-dibromophenol) to provide 0.1 to less than 1 equivalent OH per epoxy group. A number of suitable known epoxide starting materials are mentioned. If desired the brominated bisphenol may be reacted with caustic soda and epichlorohydrin to form a diglycidyl ether which then reacts in the same stage with residual brominated bisphenol. In a typical example (1) the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A was heated and stirred with 4,41-isopropylidene bis - (2,6 - dibromophenol), the mixture was cooled, trithylamine added, and heating resumed. The product, after removal of volatiles, was dissolved in methyl ethyl ketone, or in acetone and was used to impregnate cloth for a laminate followed by curing with BF3-monoethylamine complex.
