titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to primer coating compositions
abstract A primer coating composition adapted for use on acetal plastic surfaces comprises a mixture of a thermoplastic film-forming polymer containing hydroxyl groups or chlorine bearing chains, a liquid tertiary phosphoric acid ester with the ester linkage to an aliphatic carbon atom, said ester having the general formula (RO) (R1O)(R11O)PO, in which R, R1 and R11 represent aliphatic chains containing one chlorine atom and a liquid or solid non-toxic complex of boron trifluoride capable of liberating boron trifluoride below the baking temperature to be used in curing the coating. The polymer may be a cellulose acetate-propionate or acetate-butyrate, nitrocellulose, chlorinated rubber, a polyvinyl chloride-acetate copolymer or a polyvinyl acetal polymer. The phosphate may be tris 2-chloroethyl phosphate, tris 3-chlor, 2-hydroxyl propyl phosphate, or tris 3-chloropropyl phosphate. A list of boron trifluoride complexes which have been used satisfactorily is given. Those used in the examples are boron trifluoride: di-ethyl etherate, boron trifluoride: di-methyl formamide, boron trifluoride: di-hydrate and boron trifluoride: di-methanol. The composition preferably contains a pigment present in the ratio of from 0.25/1.0 to 3.0)1.0 pigment to binder by weight. Pigments used in the examples are titanium dioxide, carbon black, magnesium silicate, lithopone, red iron oxide and lampblack. An example of a solvent used to thin the compositions is a mixture of toluol, methyl iso-butyl ketone, butanol and isopropanol. The primer facilitates the application of decorative coatings to acetal plastic shaped objects.
