titleOfInvention Benzophenones and the preparation thereof
abstract The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0985658/C2/1> wherein R1 and R2 each represent a halogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, nitro, trifluoromethyl, carboxy, alkoxycarbonyl, carbamyl or cyano group but at least one of which is a carboxy, alkoxycarbonyl, carbamyl or cyano group and wherein the broken lines denote that the groups attached thereby are optional. The carboxy substituted benzophenones may be prepared from the corresponding methyl substituted benzophenones and acylated to yield a methyl substituted 2-acetamido-benzophenone, which may be oxidized to a carboxy-substituted 2-acetamide benzophenone. The latter may be hydrolysed to a carboxy-substituted 2-amino benzophenone. The carboxy groups may be esterified, or converted to carbamyl by dehydration of the ammonium salt of the carboxylic acid. The carbamyl compounds may be converted to cyano derivaties by dehydration (e.g. by treatment with POCl3).
