abstract | The invention comprises 3 - (hexahydrobenzyloxycarbonyloxy) - 17b - hydroxy-estra-1,3,5(10 - triene, 3b - (hexahydrobenzyloxycarbonyloxy) - androst - 5 - en - 17 - one, 17b - (hexa-hydrobenzyloxycarbonyloxy) - 19-nor - androst - 4 - en - 3 - one, 17b - (hexahydrobenzyloxycarbonyloxy) - 5a - androstan-3 - one, 3 - acetoxy - 17b - (hexahydrobenzyloxycarbonyloxy) - estra - 1,3,5(10) - triene, 17b - (hexahydrobenzyloxycarbonyloxy) - 3-hydroxy - estra - 1,3,5(10) - triene and processes for the preparation thereof in which an appropriate 3 - and/or 17 - hydroxy steroid is reacted with hexahydrobenzyl chloroformate in a basic medium to yield the desired compound. The basic medium may be provided by potassium hydroxide or pyridine. Pharmaceutical compositions having estrogenic activity and containing the above compounds are administered trancutaneously by intramuscular or subcutaneous injections or rectally as a suppository. |
