titleOfInvention | The preparation of oximes |
abstract | Oximes are made from alkanes, including cycloalkanes, by mixing the alkane and a nitrosating agent and exposing the mixture to ultra-violet light, the formation of a deposit of the reaction product sufficient to halt the reaction being prevented by flowing chlorosulphonic acid over the reactor surface. Suitable alkanes are those having 5-12 C atoms, especially cyclohexane. Nitrosating agents, e.g. nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, nitrosyl chloride and nitrosyl sulphuric acid may be used alone, or mixed with hydrogen chloride and/or chlorine, or as solutions in chlorosulphonic acid. The preferred agent is a mixture of nitrosyl chloride and hydrogen chloride in the ratio 1 : 4. The reaction is preferably carried out at 7-35 DEG C. The feed rate of nitrosating agent is maintained so that the reaction mass is yellow to yellowish-brown, to avoid formation of by-product. The chlorosulphonic acid used for washing the walls may be used repeatedly until it is saturated with product, preferably chlorosulphonic acid which it too highly concentrated is not employed. The main product is an oxime hydrochloride which is readily soluble in chlorosulphonic acid. If the chlorosulphonic acid solution is heated to about 90 DEG C., the corresponding lactam is formed. Alternatively, if the chlorosulphonic acid solution is diluted and neutralized the free oxime is obtained. Specification 903,680 is referred to. |
