titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to propellent compositions
abstract A propellent composition comprises a vinyl chloride polymer or copolymer, an organic plasticizer for the polymer, ammonium perchlorate in amount sufficient to maintain active combustion of said polymer and plasticizer and a minor proportion of a metal chromate or metal chromite in an amount which increases the burning rate of the composition. The chromates and chromites may be those of copper, iron, zinc, cadmium or magnesium and may be made by dissolving the appropriate nitrate in water, adding ammonium dichromate and then adding ammonium hydroxide and filtering off the chromate which may be converted to the chromite by strong heating. Mixed salts of magnesium and copper; and of cadmium, copper and zinc may be obtained similarly by starting with the appropriate mixture of nitrates. Preferred plasticizers are dibutyl sebacate and dioctyl sebacate; dioctyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, di-(methoxyethyl) phthalate, dioctyl adipate, di-(3,5,5-trimethylphenyl)-adipate and glycol esters of higher fatty acids may also be used. A preferred composition consists of 60-80% of the perchlorate, 12 1/2 % of plasticizer and 12 1/2 % of polyvinyl chloride or vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and up to 2% of the catalyst. Specification 853,320 is referred to.
