titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of copolymers
abstract Amorphous vulcanizable copolymers of a non-conjugated diolefin, with ethylene and/or alpha-olefins having 3 to 8 carbon are made by copolymerizing at a temperature of 0 DEG to - 80 DEG C., a mixture of the monomers in the presence of a catalyst consisting of the reaction product of an aluminium or beryllium alkyl halide or mixture, and a hydrocarbon soluble vanadium compound wherein at least one of the valencies of the metal is satisfied by a nitrogen atom bound to an organic group, and which has been prepared at 0 DEG to - 80 DEG C. The polymerization is preferably effected in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent or diluent, and the ratio between the monomers is kept constant by periodic or continuous addition of same. Specified non-conjugated dienes are 1,4-pentadiene, 2-methyl-1,4-pentadiene, 1,5-hexadiene, 2-methyl-1,5-hexadiene, 2 - phenyl - 1,5 - hexadiene, 1,4 - hexadiene, 1,4-heptadiene, 1,5-heptadiene, 2-methyl-1,6-heptadiene, 1,6-heptadiene, 1,5-octadiene, 2,6-dimethyl - 1,7 - octadiene, 3,5 - dimethyl-1,7 - octadiene, and 3,7 - dimethyl - 1,6 - octadiene. Suitable vanadium compounds are pyridinates, aminates, such as the trimethyl-, the triethyl, and the dimethylethylaminate, and quinolates of vanadium tri- and tetrachloride and vanadyl trichloride. The alpha-olefin may be ethylene, propylene, or butene-1. The other ingredient of the catalyst may be diethylaluminiummonochloride and diethylaluminiummonofluoride. The catalyst may be prepared in situ, but preferably it is preformed and introduced soon after into the monomeric mixture. Exemplified copolymers are of ethylene - propylene - 1,5 - hexadiene, ethylene-propylene - 2 - methyl - 1,4 - pentadiene, and ethylene - propylene - 2 - methyl - 1,5 - hexadiene. The copolymers are recovered by conventional techniques.
