Benzoic acid, phenol, phenyl benzoate and apparently copper and magnesium benzoates are recovered from the drained residue of the liquid phase oxidation of benzoic acid to phenol by hydrolysing said residue with steam and then extracting with an aqueous organic solvent such as an alcohol or ketone with up to 4 carbon atoms.
