abstract | Paper of felted cellulose fibres containing 5 to 35% by weight of the dry paper of finely divided filler is beater-sized with 1/4 to 8% by weight on the solids content of the furnish of an organic cationic polymer and 1/2 to 8% on the same basis of a dimer of a ketene containing a monovalent hydrocarbon group having 6 to 20 carbon atoms. The dimer may be of hexadecyl ketene, phenyl ketene, decylphenyl ketene or cyclohexylketene. The filler may be calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, titanium dioxide or barium sulphate, which may be co-precipitated with zinc sulphide. The cationic polymer may be a melamine-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, guanidine-formaldehyde or alkylenepolyamine-halohydrin resin, or starch incorporating amino or substituted amino groups in the molecule. The product is opaque, water-repellent and wet-scuff-resistant, and may be used for cigarette tips or for writing or printing. The Specification also describes, for purposes of comparison papers which are similar but for the omission of the cationic polymer or of the ketene dimer. Specifications 675,477, 677,184, U.S.A. Specifications 2,345,543, 2,559,220, 2,601,597, 2,627,477, 2,657,132, 2,745,744 and 2,762,270 are referred to. |
