titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to processes for the production of steroid compounds
abstract 3 - Hydroxy - estra - 1,3,5(10) - trien - 17 - one is obtained in a process which comprises subjecting estra-4,9-diene-3,17-dione to isomerization either by heating in the presence of an isomerization catalyst or by reaction with a lower organic acid halide having from 2-6 carbon atoms. As isomerization catalyst there may be used palladinized charcoal. The starting estra-4,9-diene-3, 17-dione may be obtained by subjecting 17-hydroxy-des A-estra-9-en-5-one to oxidation so as to form the corresponding 5,17-dione, reacting the latter with a secondary amine H.NRR1 to yield the corresponding 5-enamino - des A - estra - 5(10),9(11)-dien-17-one, condensing the latter with a 1-halogeno-3-chloro-2-butene to form 3-chloro-4,5-seco-estr-2, 9-diene-3,17-dione, subjecting the latter to acid hydrolysis to form 4,5 seco-estr-9-ene-3, 5,17-trione which is treated with an alkaline condensation agent to yield the desired estra-4, 9-diene-3,17-dione. Specifications 983,607 and 983,608 are referred to.
