titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to insulated metal objects |
abstract | A layer of insulation on the surface of a metal object is formed by applying a solution of glassy sodium phosphate to said surface and curing to a hard glassy substance. The sodium phosphate used is in the range 1Na2O/1P2O5 to 1.4Na2O/1P2O5, in particular, hexametaphosphate or metaphosphate. Aqueous solutions of 25-50 parts by weight phosphate to 100 parts by weight water are used. Curing temperatures range 475-800 DEG C. for 1/2 -10 minutes. Coatings may be used as the insulation for steel laminations, and to construct magnetic cores for electrical apparatus, to inhibit the flow of eddy currents. The solution may contain a filler material, e.g. silica aerogel, to increase the gap between successive coated laminations where extra spacing is required. It is stated that the annealing of laminations produces an oxide coating with which liquid sodium phosphate reacts. |
