titleOfInvention | Preparation of ª‰-(hydanto-5-yl)-propionaldehyde phenylhydrazone |
abstract | The invention comprises b -(hydanto-5-yl) propionaldehyde phenylhydrozone of the formula <FORM:0982726/C2/1> It is prepared by reducing 5-cyanoethylhydantoin in aqueous acid solution in the presence of a Raney-nickel catalyst, under a hydrogen pressure of 1 to 70 kg./cm.2 at 5 DEG to 50 DEG C. and reacting the b -(hydanto-5-yl) propionaldehyde with phenylhydrazine. The acid may be acetic, formic, propionic, tartaric, or phosphoric acid present in amounts of from 2 to 10 moles per mole of 5-cyanoethylhydantoin used. The aqueous medium may be water, aqueous methanol, ethanol or dioxane. The nickel catalyst is used in amounts of from 1/4 to 1/2 the amount by weight of 5-cyanoethylhydantoin, and lead or lead ions in amount of at least 2% by weight may also be present. Specification 982,727 is referred to. |
