titleOfInvention | Process for the production of alkylgallium compounds |
abstract | Trialkylgallium compounds are prepared by reacting one mol. of a trivalent gallium compound other than gallium trifluoride, with at least three mols. of a trialkylaluminium compound or an etherate thereof. The trivalent gallium compound is preferably free from water of crystallization of solvate: specified examples include the trichloride, tribromide, triiodide, sulphate, phosphate and acetate. Either or both reactants may be dissolved in a solvent prior to reaction, suitable solvents being aliphatic and/or alicyclic hydrocarbons and/or ethers. Pentanes, hexanes, heptanes, octanes, methylcyclopentane, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, decalins, diethylether, isopropylether, tetrahydrofuran and dioxane are specified. Trialkylgallium compounds and/or dialkylaluminium compounds may also be used as solvents. The product trialkylgallium compound may be fractionally distilled under reduced pressure from the reaction mixture. If desired, the excess trialkylaluminium compound may be complexed with, e.g., sodium fluoride or potassium chloride. Specification 920,146 is referred to. |
