titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of partially saponified polyvinyl esters
abstract In a process for the manufacture of partially saponified polyvinyl esters by alcoholysis, a polyvinyl ester of a monocarboxylic acid which is dissolved in a solvent mixture containing at most 0.5% by weight of water, based on the total reaction mixture, and consisting of an alcohol and the ester formed by alcoholysis in a weight ratio of ester to alcohol of 50: 1 to 2.5: 1, is partially saponified by stirring at a temperature between 0 DEG C. and the boiling-point of the mixture in the presence of 0.1 to 2% by weight, based on the weight of polyvinyl ester, of an alkali metal hydroxide and/or alcoholate. The polyvinyl ester may be polyvinyl acetate, formate, propionate, butyrate, stearate or benzoate; copolymers of vinyl acetate and vinyl propionate; or graft copolymers of vinyl acetate on polyethylene glycol or hydroxyethylated polypropylene glycol. The preferred alcohol is methanol. The preferred catalyst is sodium hydroxide. Examples describe the partial saponification of (1 to 11) polyvinyl acetate and (12 to 15) graft polymers of vinyl acetate on polyethylene glycol in the presence of methanol, methyl acetate and sodium hydroxide; (16 to 18) polyvinyl acetate in the presence of ethanol, ethyl acetate and sodium hydroxide; and (19) polyvinyl acetate in the presence of isopropanol, isopropyl acetate and sodium hydroxide. In Example 6 a small proportion of water is present. Specifications 692,324 and 725,717 are referred to
