titleOfInvention Pharmaceutical compositions containing quaternary ammonium compounds
abstract Quaternary ammonium compounds having a cation of general formula <FORM:0981092/C2/1> wherein R1 and R2 are methyl, ethyl or 2-hydroxyethyl groups, are prepared by quaternization of an appropriate tertiary amine (which may be prepared in situ from secondary or primary amines), optionally followed by double decomposition of the salts.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise quaternary ammonium compounds containing a cation of general formula <FORM:0981092/A5-A6/1> wherein R1 and R2 are each a methyl, ethyl or 2-hydroxyethyl group and pharmaceutically acceptable carriers in discrete units each containing a predetermined amount or concentration of the drug. Compositions in general are described in the form of tablets, powders, granules, capsules, cachets, syrups, suspensions, emulsions, solutions, suppositories and pessaries. The compounds depress sympathetic nerve function.
