titleOfInvention Foamed compositions containing polyvinyl chloride
abstract Foamed polyvinylchloride compositions are made by mixing finely divided polyvinyl chloride, a plasticizer, a prepolymer having free isocyanate groups and water, then heating the mixture. The prepolymer, which may be used in amounts up to 40%, may be derived from the reaction of di- or tri-isocyanates with a polyol, e.g. a polyether or polyester with totylene di- or tri-isocyanate, hexamethylene or naphthalene di-isocyanate or 4,4-di-isocyanate diphenyl methane. Specified plasticizers, e.g. polypropylene adipate and dibutyl phthalate, may be used in amounts 0.3-2.5 parts per part of P.V.C. Sufficient water may be added to avoid free isocyanate groups in the finished composition whilst the viscosity of the composition may be increased by incorporating polyurethane forming substances such as polyhydroxy compounds, polyethers and polyesters. The composition may be heated to 80 DEG to 150 DEG C. Polyoxyalkylene polysiloxane block copolymers may be added to the composition before foaming. The isocyanate-water reaction may be catalysed by organo-tin derivatives or tertiary amines whilst blowing agents such as CCl3F and C2Cl3F3 may be included. In the example a prepolymer formed from tolylene di-isocyanate and tri-methylol propane-propylene oxide adduct of M.W. 310 is used together with a trimethylol propane-propylene oxide adduct to increase the viscosity of the mixture. Specification 928,325 is referred to.
