titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to papers for use in chromatographic separations |
abstract | A cellulose derivative having ion-exchange properties is prepared as follows: Cellulose is mercerized with sodium hydroxide solution, excess of which is pressed out. It is then added to benzyl chloride and heated under reflux, washed with acetone and then with water, extracted with alcohol and dried. This product was a benzyl-cellulose with a degree of substitution of 1.0. It was again mercerized with alkali and excess pressed out. Sodium 2-bromo-ethane-sulphonate was added and the mixture heated, and then washed successively with water, semi-normal hydrochloric acid, water, semi-normal sodium hydroxide and water. Specification 911,820 is referred to.ALSO:A chromatographic paper contains one or more ion-exchange resins and one or more ion-exchange celluloses uniformly dispersed in it. The ion-exchange cellulose may be in powder form or in fibrous form, and in the latter case may be the sole fibrous material of the paper. The functional groups of the ion-exchange resin and ion-exchange cellulose may be sulphonic acid groups, phosphoric acid groups, carboxylic acid groups, primary, secondary or tertiary amino groups or quaternary ammonium groups. The ion-exchange cellulose may also contain non-ionisable substituents such as methyl or acetyl. The ion-exchange resin and the ion-exchange cellulose may be a cation-exchanger and an anion-exchanger respectively or vice versa, or both of the same kind. When the ion-exchange cellulose is in fibre form, it may be added to slurry of other cellulose fibres, e.g. cotton linters, before they are beaten, and the ion-exchange resin added to the slurry after beating. When the ion-exchang cellulose is in powder form it may be added with the ion-exchange resin. Specification 911,820 is referred to. |
