titleOfInvention Process for making 1,1-dichloro-2-fluoroethylene
abstract 1,1-Dichloro-2-fluoroethylene is produced by the dehydrochlorination of 1,1,2-trichloro-2-fluoroethane by the action of a strong base in a mutual solvent for the base and the halogenated compounds. The 1,1,2-trichloro-2-fluoroethane may be obtained by dehydrochlorinating 1,2-dichloro-1-fluoroethane by a strong base in a mutual solvent followed by chlorination of the resulting 1-chloro-2-fluoroethylene by the addition of chlorine. The dehydrochlorination steps may be performed in an alcohol solvent, e.g. methyl, ethyl or isopropyl alcohols, or ethylene or diethylene glycol. The strong base may be sodium or potassium hydroxide or tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide.
