abstract Benzimidazolium quaternary salts are obtained by mixing 1-ethyl-2-methyl-5-chloro-6-bromo-benzimidazole with ethyl iodide or b -bromoethanol and heating. Specification 955,963 is referred to.ALSO:Cyanine and merocyanine dyes are described which contain a 5-chloro-6-bromo-benzimidazole nucleus. Carbocyanine dyes are prepared by reacting a 5-chloro-6-bromo-benzimidazolium salt with ethyl ortho-formate to give a symmetrical dye or with a benzoxazole or benzthiazole having a reactive 2-(b -phenyliminoethylidene) group or a thiazolinium salt having a reactive 2-(b -anilinovinyl) group (in the presence of acetic anhydride) to give an unsymmetrical dye. A monomethine or merocyanine dye is prepared by reacting 1,3-diethyl - 2 - methyl - 5 - chloro - 6 - bromobenzimidazolium iodide with 1,3-dimethyl-2-methylmercapto - 5,6 - dichloro - benzimidazolium methyl sulphate or with 3-ethyl-5-acetanilido-methylene rhodanine respectively. The 1-position of the 5-chloro-6-bromo-benzimidazole nucleus may have a b -acetoxyethyl substituent. Specification 955,963 is referred to.
