titleOfInvention Copolymers
abstract A ternary copolymer of ethylene, a monoethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon having 3 to 5 carbon atoms and a methyl-pentene-1 may be prepared using a catalyst comprising the reaction product of (a) a salt of a metal selected from Group IV to VIII of the Mendel<\>aeef Table with (b) an organometallic compound or a hydride of a metal from Group I to III. The preferred terpolymer is formed from ethylene, propylene and 4-methyl-pentene-1 and the preferred catalyst is the reaction product of vanadium tetrachloride or oxytrichloride with an aluminium alkyl halide or aluminium trihexyl. Preferably the comonomers are in the vapour phase when contacted with the catalyst and the copolymerization is preferably effected in an inert diluent.
