titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to epoxy resin compositions
abstract A hardenable composition comprises an epoxide compound or mixture of epoxide compounds containing on average more than one 1:2-epoxide group per molecule and at least one chelate compound in which the co-ordinating atom is bound by one or more of its valencies to an oxygen or sulphur atom. Specified chelate compounds are those of the general formula <FORM:0977712/C3/1> <FORM:0977712/C3/2> and <FORM:0977712/C3/3> where A is a co-ordinating atom, hal is a fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom, X is oxygen or sulphur, Y is oxygen or sulphur doubly bonded to Z or nitrogen, Z in formula (I) is an organic group linking X and Y such that the number of consecutive atoms linking X and Y is not less than 2 nor more than 4, m is 1, 2 or 3, n is 1, 2, 3 or 4, Z is hydrogen or an organic or metal-containing organic group of valency m where m is 1 or 2, P, Q and R represent hydrogen, halogen or monovalent organic residues with the proviso that any 2 of P, Q and R may be a divalent residue joining two residues of formula (II) omitting one of P, Q and R, Z in formula (III) with the adjacent carbon atoms represents an aromatic nucleus which may be substituted and may be joined to a second <FORM:0977712/C3/4> unit via a second pair vicinal carbon atoms and K is an organic radical containing an oxygen, sulphur or nitrogen atom co-ordinated to atom A and joined via a single other atom to the indicated carbon atom of the aromatic nucleus. Specified co-ordinating atoms are boron, aluminium, zinc, cadmium, ferric iron, stannic tin, zirconium, vanadium, titanium, antimony, gallium and indium. Specified epoxy compounds are polyglycidyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols and phenols e.g. butane-1:4-diol, glycerol, resorcinol, pyrocatechol, hydroquinone, dihydroxynaphthalene, bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) methane, bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) methylphenylmethane, bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) tolyl methane, 4:4-dihydroxydiphenyl, bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) sulphone, 2:2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane and phenol-formaldehyde novolaks; polyglycidyl esters of polycarboxylic acids, e.g. phthalic acid; aminopolyepoxides obtained by the dehydrohalogenation of reaction products of epihalohydrins with primary or secondary amines, e.g. n-butylamine, aniline and bis (4-methylaminophenyl) methane; epoxidized cyclic and acyclic olefines and polyolefines. Reactive diluents e.g. glycidyl ethers of monohydric alcohols and phenols and conventional hardeners e.g. mono, di- and tributylamine, p-phenylene diamine, bis (p-aminophenyl) methane, ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetra (hydroxyethyl) diethylene triamine, tetraethylene pentamine, trimethylamine, diethylamine, triethanolamine, Mannich bases, piperidine, guanidine, phenyl guanidine, diphenyl guanidine, dicyandiamide, aniline-formaldehyde resins, melamine-formaldehyde resins, polyamides, polymers of amino styrenes, isocyanates, isothiocyanates, hydroquinone, resorcinol, bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) dimethyl methane, p-benzoquinone, phenol-aldehyde resins, oil-modified phenol-aldehyde resins, reaction products of aluminium alkoxides or phenolates with acetoacetic esters, phosphoric acid, phthalic anhydride, methylene endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, dodecenyl succinic anhydride, hexahydrophthalic anhydride, hexachloroendomethylene tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, endomethylene tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride and succinic anhydride. Fillers e.g. asphalt, bitumen, glass fibres, quartz powder, mica, cellulose, kaolin, kieselguhr, finely divided silica and metal powder may be included in the compositions. Many examples are given. Specifications 882,360, 939,412, 943,924 and 950,285 are referred to.
