titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to alkyl and arylalkyl diols |
abstract | The invention comprises nonane-, 8-methyl-nonane-, 9 phenyl-nonane-, 8-methyl-decane-, and 7 phenyl-heptane-, 1, 7-diols and a process for preparing alkane diols and o -aryl alkane diols having a chain length of 7 to 15 carbon atoms which comprises hydrogenating furfurylidene ketones of the general formula <FORM:0977100/C1/1> wherein R represents CH3(CH2)-n, C6H5(CH = CH)- or C6H5-, m is 1 or 2 and n is 0 or an integer from 1 to 5 (preferably dissolved in dioxan), in the presence of copper chromate or Raney nickel at 240 DEG to 260 DEG C. and 250 to 350 atmospheres gauge pressure. The diols may be separated from the by-products formed in said process, which include secondary tetra-hydrofuryl alcohols and 2-alkyl, or arylalkyl, tetra-hydrofurans, by fractional distillation. |
