titleOfInvention Amphoteric ion exchange resins
abstract b ,b 1-Di-(ethylene-imino)-p-diethyl benzene is prepared by reacting divinylbenzene and ethyleneimine in presence of sodium.ALSO:Amphoteric ion exchange resins are prepared by copolymerizing ethylene imine N-alkyl carboxylic acid esters of general formula <FORM:0976570/C3/1> wherein X is a carboxylic acid alkyl ester radical and n is 1 to 4, with a compound containing two or three ethylene imine groups in the molecule, in presence of a sulphonic acid ester or dialkyl sulphate as catalyst and subsequently saponifying the polymer obtained. Specified ethylene imine N-alkyl carboxylic acid esters are ethylene imine N-acetic acid methyl or ethyl esters, b -ethylene imino-propionic acid methyl ester and b ethylene-imino-butyric acid methyl ester. The process is carried out at 0 DEG C., or above, preferably 15 DEG to 25 DEG C., by admixing the reactants in presence of 0.01 to 5% by weight of catalyst and allowing the reaction mixture to stand until a solid resin is formed. Solvents, e.g. aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, and emulsifiers, e.g. fatty alcohol emulsifiers may be added. The resin so formed is then shredded and saponified using acid or alkali, e.g. 2N caustic alkali solutions. Specified catalysts are diethyl sulphate, dipropyl sulphate, dibutyl sulphate; alkyl esters of methane sulphonic acid, benzene sulphonic acid or toluene sulphonic acid, which may be diluted with neutral solvents. The examples describe copolymerization of b ,b 1-di-(ethylene-imino) -pdiethyl benzene with (1) ethylene imine -N- acetic acid ethyl ester in presence of di-ethyl sulphate and (2) ethylene imine -N- propionic acid methyl ester in presence of diethyl sulphate. The products have combining capacities of 5.0 to 9.0 m. equivalents and may form chelates and complexes with polyvalent metal ions, e.g. Al, Ba, Ca, Pb and Cu, which may be used as metal supports.
