titleOfInvention Production of linear polycondensates
abstract 975,813. Copoly(carboxylate/sulphonate)s. GEVAERT PHOTO-PRODUCTEN N.V. Dec. 22, 1960 [Dec. 22, 1959], No. 44130/60. Heading C3R. Copoly(carboxylate/sulphonate)s are prepared by a process which comprises condensing with an alkali diphenate a mixture of (a) a diacid halide of an aromatic disulphonic acid and (b) phosgene, thiophosgene or a diacid halide of a dicarboxylic acid, the diphenate being dissolved in water and the mixture of (a) and (b) being dissolved or dispersed in an organic liquid which is immiscible with water and in which the polycondensate formed by the reaction is at least to some extent soluble. In a modification of the process a diacid halide of an aromatic monocarboxy-sulphonic acid replaces some or all of (a) and/or (b). The process is preferably performed in the presence of a catalyst comprising one or more onium compounds (e.g. ammonium, phosphonium and sulphonium salts). Many starting materials and catalysts are specified and the water immiscible organic liquid may be methylene dichloride; chloroform; 1, 2-dichloroethane; 1, 1, 2-trichloroethane, sym.-tetrachloroethane, 1, 1, 1-trichloroethane, and dichloroethylene, and mixtures of these with benzene and toluene. Colourless or substantially colourless copoly(carboxylate/sulphonate)s (including the copolycarbonates and copolythiocarbonates) having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0À4 dl./g. when measured in sym.-tetrachloroethane at 25 ‹C. are claimed per se. The products are useful in the manufacture of films especially for use as supports for the light sensitive layer in photographic materials.
