titleOfInvention Halopropane production
abstract 2,2-Difluoropropane is made by subjecting gaseous 2,2-chlorofluoropropane to the action of gaseous substantially anhydrous hydrogen fluoride at a temperature of 100-400 DEG C. in the presence of activated carbon as catalyst. The reaction may take place at substantially atmospheric pressure. Preferably a mixture of the gases in a mol ratio of hydrogen fluoride to chlorofluoropropane between 3:1 and 1:1 is fed into an elongated tubular reactor made of inert material such as nickel or alloys thereof, or steel lined with graphite or fused alumina, the reactor being packed with activated carbon of average mesh size between 1/25 and 1/4 of the reactor diameter and enveloped in an electric furnace. Detailed examples are given.
