titleOfInvention Production of cellular polyurethane material
abstract Cellular polyurethane materials are formed by mixing under pressure (see Division B1) two polyurethane forming components and injecting a volatile liquid blowing agent at such a rate that the resulting polyurethane froth moves through the discharge nozzle with laminar flow and preferably at constant velocity. In an example the first component consists of 75 parts of polyisocyanate ingredients (comprising 80 parts of 2,4-toluene diisocyanate and 20 parts 2,6-toluene diisocyanate) and 25 parts polyether ingredients (containing 1 cresol of sorbitol per 10 mols propylene oxide). The second component consists of 30 parts of the above polyether ingredient and 29.5 parts of an activator mixture (comprising 26 parts N,N,N1, N1-tetrakis (2-hydroxypropyl) ethylene diamine, 3 parts triethylene diamine and 0.5 parts emulsifiers made up of 80% propylene glycol and 10% polyethylene glycol). The components in the preparation of 100 parts of the first and 59.5 parts of the second are supplied to the mixing chamber into which 20 parts difluorodichloromethane are also injected (all proportions are by weight). The mixture expands from 100 p.s.i. and 72 lb./cu.ft. in the mixing chamber to 2.5 lb./cu.ft. atmospheric pressure and is further expanded in the second by the heat of reaction to 1.7-1.8 lb./cu.ft.
