titleOfInvention | Unsaturated aldehydes |
abstract | An unsaturated aldehyde is recovered from the product of the catalytic oxidation of an aliphatic olefin with oxygen by removing the bulk of water from the vapour from the oxidation step by a single- or multi-stage condensation, separating the unsaturated aldehyde by washing the residual gas with a C6-C20 branched chain hydrocarbon at a temperature between 0 DEG C. and -70 DEG C. and recovering the unsaturated aldehyde from the wash liquor by rectification. The process is particularly suitable for the recovery of aldehydes containing 3-6 carbon atoms. Suitable hydrocarbons for the washing step are, for example, iso-octane, propylene trimer and propylene tetramer. The washing may be carried out in one or more steps. In an example a propylene-propane mixture is oxidised with air in the presence of a catalyst consisting of molybdenum oxide, bismuth oxide and silica, the product is condensed to remove the water, is treated with propylene tetramer at -20 DEG C. and -50 DEG C. and then fractionated to give acrolein. Similar results are obtained if iso-octane, propylene trimer or a C9-C11 Fiseher-Tropsch fraction is used instead of propylene tetramer. |
