titleOfInvention Cathode ray tube apparatus
abstract 974,304. Cathode-ray tubes. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Feb. 8, 1961 [March 17, 1960], No. 4760/61.Heading H1D. In a cathode-ray picture tube in which an electron beam is scanned over a screen, the total deflection being in excess of 110 degrees, radial deflection of the beam effected in a primary deflection zone 22, Fig. 1, is enhanced by an electrostatic beam-decelerating field set up between a conductive surface 30 spaced uniformly from the screen and a conductive layer 28 coextensive with the screen. As shown, the tube comprises a phosphor screen 26, Fig. 1, having a conductive coating 28 which is spaced from a conductive coating 30 on the funnel 18 by a resistive iron oxide coating 32. The electron beam 21 is deflected by a conventional magnetic yoke 24 and further radially deflected by a decelerating field established between coatings 28, 30. Suitable potentials are given. In Fig. 3, the decelerating field is established between grids 88, 92 connected to conductive coatings 62, 90 as shown. The grids 88, 92 may be concave towards the phosphor screen, Figs. 4-7 (not shown), for providing correction of pin-cushion distortion, or grid 92 may be omitted. In Fig. 8, four convex, conductive elements 124, connected to conductive coating 134, are provided in the tube to produce a preferred shaping of the decelerating field. Alternatively, the four sides of the funnel portion of the tube envelope may each be convex towards the interior, a conductive coating thereon replacing the elements 124, Figs. 12-15 (not shown). The tube neck may include more than one gun for colour television.
