titleOfInvention | Hydration of olefins in the presence of a solvent |
abstract | Olefines containing 3 or more carbon atoms are hydrated with water over a solid hydration catalyst at a temperature in the range 175-600 DEG F. to form an alcohol, at least part of the olefin and part of the water being in the liquid state, and the reaction taking place in the presence of an organic solvent (other than the product alcohol) which is a liquid miscible with the reactants to form solutions in which the product alcohol is more soluble than in the reactants or solvent per se so that the mixture forms two solvent-containing phases one containing water and the other olefine, and both containing the product alcohol and being insoluble in each other. Suitable solvents are, for example, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, iso-propyl, and tertiary butyl alcohols, methyl ethyl ether, dioxane, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, acetone or acetic acid. If desired an olefine which hydrates to form a solvent alcohol at a faster rate than the olefine starting material may be added to the reaction mixture. Suitable catalysts are, for example, blue oxide of tungsten, tungsten sulphide, nickel sulphide, ion exchange resins, alumina, thoria, zirconia, aluminium sulphate, kaolin and titania. The process may be carried out batchwise or continuously. In examples (a) methyl butenes are converted to tertiary amyl alcohol using acetic acid as solvent and (b) isobutylene to tertiary butyl alcohol using isopropanol as solvent. |
