titleOfInvention Organolithium polymerization initiators and their use
abstract A catalyst composition for polymerizing substituted or unsubstituted conjugated dienes comprises, contacting lithium with a monomer which is a conjugated diene or a vinylidene-substituted aromatic compound, in a medium of an aliphatic monoether and in the presence of a small amount of sodium. The catalyst composition is generally prepared in the presence of a promoter which is a polycyclic aromatic compound or a polyaryl-substituted ethylene. The Specification contains a long list of suitable dienes and vinylidene-substituted compounds of which isoprene and 1,3-butadiene, are exemplified. A long list of promoters is also included in the Specification of which naphthalene and methyl naphthalene are exemplified. The aliphatic monoethers are of the general formula ROR in which R is alkyl group containing from 2 to 12 carbon atoms such as diethyl ether. The catalyst composition is used for polymerizing dienes alone, or in conjunction with vinyl aromatics, heterocyclic-nitrogen monomers, acrylic-type monomers, or vinyl furan. The polymerization is generally effected in a hydrocarbon diluent. The polymers may range from liquids to solid rubbery materials. The polymers may be after-treated to include -COOH groups. The polymers are recovered by treatment with carbon dioxide, acids, and water. Certain of the polymers were analysed by infra-red techniques and the percentage of the polymer formed by cis 1,4-, or trans 1,4-, or 1,2-addition determined. Specifications 906,315 and 972,246 are referred to.
