titleOfInvention Alkaline rearrangement of hydrocarbon substituted silanes
abstract Silanes of the general formula RnSi(OR1)4- n, wherein R is alkyl, phenyl or benzyl, R1 is alkyl, and n is 2 or 3, at least one R per molecule of the silane being alkyl or benzyl, are produced by heating above 150 DEG C. a mixture of (A) at least one silane of the general formula RaSi(OR1)4- a where a is 1-4, the average a being less than 4, and at least one silane having alkyl or benzyl as the only R radicals, and (B) 0.1 to 20% by weight of (A) of an alkali metal base. Specified R groups are methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, benzyl and phenyl. Specified R1 groups are methyl and ethyl. Specified alkali metal bases are sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium oxide, potassium oxide, lithium methoxide, potassium propoxide, sodium ethoxide, potassium methoxide, sodium methoxide, sodium amide, potassium amide, lithium amide, sodium trimethyl silonate, dipotanio dimethyl silonate, NaO[Si(CH3)2O]4Na, and KO[Si(CH3)2O]2K. Examples describe the preparation of: (1) Ph.Me2SiOMe from a mixture of Ph2Si(OMe)2, PhSi(OMe)3 and Me2Si(OMe)2 using NaOMe; (2) MePhSi(OMe)2 from a mixture of Ph2Si(OMe)2 and MeSi(OMe)3 using NaOMe; (3) PhMeSi(OMe)2 from a mixture of PhSi(OMe)3 and MeSi(OMe)3 using NaOMe; (4) (C6H4CH2)2Si(OEt)2 from (C6H4CH2)Si(OEt)3 using KOEt; (5) Pr2Si(OMe)2 from PrSi(OMe)3 using LiNH2 or Me3SiONa and (6) MePhSi-(OMe)2 and MePh2SiOMe from a mixture of Ph4Si and MeSi(OMe)3 using NaOMe.
