titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to 18-dichlorosteroids
abstract The invention comprises steroids of the formula <FORM:0971713/C1/1> (wherein R is alkyl of at most 4 carbon atoms; R1 is hydroxy, keto or acyloxy of at most 6 carbon atoms; R2 is hydrogen or methyl; R3 is hydrogen or keto; R4 is hydrogen or fluoro; R5 is hydrogen, hydroxy, acyloxy of at most 6 carbon atoms or methyl; R6 is hydrogen, methyl or fluoro; and Y is a single or double bond) and acid-addition salts thereof. They may be prepared by irradiating a solution of the corresponding 18-chloro-N-chloro-steroid (itself prepared by chlorination of the 18-chloro-steroid with sodium hypochlorite in chloroform or methylene chloride) in trifluoroacetic acid with ultraviolet light in an inert atmosphere. The free base may be recovered from the trifluoroacetate usually isolated and converted to other salts such as the hydrochloride, hydrobromide, sulphate, phosphate or maleate. Examples are given. Specification 950,616 is referred to.
