titleOfInvention | Process of absorbing formaldehyde from formaldehydecontaining gas |
abstract | A continuous multistage process for the substantially complete absorption of formaldehyde supplied as part of a formaldehyde-containing gas comprises: in the first stage, washing said gas with an aqueous solution containing 1-10 moles formaldehyde per mole phenol and 5-50 wt. per cent water, in the last stage washing gas not absorbed in the preceding stage in counter-current with water, and the solution resulting from the absorption in the or each stage after the first is used in conjunction with part of the solution produced in the preceding stage as washing liquid in that stage, the part of the solution produced in the first stage which is not recirculated being discharged as final solutions, the rate of phenol addition to the system, of washing water to the last stage and the rate of discharge of final solution in relation to the rate of supply of formaldehyde being such as to maintain the composition of the first stage washing liquid within the defined limits. The term "phenol" includes besides monohydroxybenzene, mono- and di-alkyl phenols such as cresol and xylenol. The formaldehyde (or a considerable part of it) in the solution as defined above is bound to be phenol. Specification 838,097, also U.S.A. Specification 2,609,352 is referred to. |
