titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the oxy-chlorination of hydrocarbons |
abstract | Chlorinated hydrocarbons are produced by contacting a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbon with up to four carbon atoms, hydrogen chloride and oxygen in the vapour phase at elevated temperatures with a catalyst comprising combined copper, combined alkali metal and/or, alkaline earth metal and combined zirconium, uranium, thorium and/or titanium deposited on activated alumina which has been subjected to a heat treatment in air at 600 DEG to 1,200 DEG C. for 2 to 24 hours. The combined copper may be copper chloride or copper oxide, the latter formed by impregnating the alumina with a solution of a copper salt, e.g. nitrate or formate, and converting this to copper oxide by thermal decomposition or hydrolysis. This may be performed simultaneously with the oxychlorination reaction. The remaining metals which constitute the catalyst may be incorporated by impregnating the alumina with salts of the metals. The metals may be incorporated in any order or all together. The catalyst may contain 0.5 to 10% by weight of copper, 0.2 to 10% by weight of alkali and/or alkaline earth metal, and 0.2 to 10% by weight or zirconium, uranium, thorium and/or titanium. The reaction may be at 200 DEG to 500 DEG C., at 1 to 10 atmospheres absolute with a contact time of 0.1 to 30 seconds. The preparation of dichloroethanes, vinyl chloride and ethyl chloride is described.ALSO:A catalyst used for oxychlorination of hydrocarbons comprises combined copper, combined alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal and combined zirconium, uranium, thorium and/or titanium deposited on activated alumina which has been subjected to heat treatment in air at 600-1200 DEG C. for 2-24 hours. The combined copper may be copper chloride or copper oxide, the oxide formed by impregnating the alumina with a solution of a copper salt, e.g. nitrate or formate, and converting this to copper oxide by thermal decomposition or hydrolysis. The alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal (including magnesium) is incorporated by impregnating the alumina with a solution of a salt of the metal, e.g. chloride, aluminate, nitrate, formate, oxalate, acetate, or hydroxide. The zirconium, uranium, thorium and/or titanium is incorporated using solutions of the chloride, hydroxide, oxychloride, carbonate, nitrate, oxalate, formate, or acetate of the metal. The metals may be incorporated simultaneously or in any order to give a catalyst containing 0,5-10% by weight of copper, 0,2-10% by weight of alkali and/or alkaline earth metal and 0,2-10% by weight of zirconium, uranium, thorium, and/or titanium, all calculated as the metal. |
