titleOfInvention Improved catalysts for the polymerization and copolymerization of mono-olefins and di-olefins
abstract A polymerization catalyst (see Division C3) component is made by reacting a dry, inorganic metal or metaloid oxide, of particle size less than 1 micron, other than silica, alumina, or alumina-silica, e.g. titania zirconia, thoria and magnesia having surface hydroxyl groups, with a Group IVA, VA, VIA metal halide or oxyhalide at 0-300 DEG C. in an inert liquid hydrocarbon whilst removing gaseous hydrogen halide by product. Metal and halogen components are thus incorporated on the surface of the particles. Numerous examples are given. Specifications 967,762, 967,763, 967,765, 967,766 and 967,767 also are referred to.ALSO:A polymerization catalyst suitable for up to C8 mono- or di-olefins or mixtures thereof is obtained by the reaction of a product consisting (see Division C1) of a metal or metaloid oxide of less than 1 micron, other than silica, alumina or alumina-silica, e.g. titania, zirconia, thoria and magnesia, and a Group IVa, Va, VIa metal halide or oxyhalide, together with a Group I, II, III metal hydride or organometallic compound, which may contain more than one metal and/or halogen. Numerous examples of reactants are specified and polymerization using the catalysts obtained are described. Hydrogen may be present as a chain-terminator. Specifications 967,762, 967,763, 967,765, 967,766 and 967,767 also are referred to.
