titleOfInvention | A process for the production of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole |
abstract | 2-mercapto benzimidazole is prepared by reacting o. nitraniline with hydrogen sulphide, or an acid or neutral water soluble salt thereof, and carbon disulphide in the presence of water at a pressure of 0-100 Atmospheres gauge, and a temperature of 40 DEG -250 DEG C. The salt of hydrogen sulphide may be added to the reaction mixture as such, or formed in situ by adding an inorganic base to the mixture, and then introducing hydrogen sulphide prior to the reaction. Examples are given using NaHS, Na2S, Ca(SH)2, KHS, K2S, and the sodium salt formed in situ; the product is worked up by filtering off the crude material after reaction, dissolving out the 2-mercapto benzimidazole with 10% milk of lime, filtering, and reprecipitating the pure product from the filtrate by acidification with concentrated hydrochloric acid. |
