titleOfInvention | New anion exchange resins |
abstract | Anion exchange resins are produced by haloalkylating and then aminating copolymers obtained from one or more monovinyl aromatic compounds and one or more polyvinyl compounds in the presence of 0.25 to 10% of an organic solvent, based on the weight of the starting co-monomers, said solvent being one in which the monomers are soluble but in which the polymers are practically insoluble or non-swellable. Organic solvents specified are aliphatic hydrocarbons e.g. benzine, white spirit; alcohols such as butanol, arylalcohol, dodecanol and cyclohexanol; and ethers such as diphenyl and dihexyl ethers. Monovinyl aromatic compounds listed are styrene; vinyl-toluene; vinyl-ethyl-benzene; vinyl-anisole and acenaphthalene, and polyvinyl compounds listed are divinyl and trivinyl-benzenes; divinyl-ethyl-benzene; divinyl-acetylene; butadiene; diethyleneglycoldimethacrylate; divinyl ketone; divinyl sulphone; oxalic acid divinyl ester; divinyl ether and methacrylic acid vinyl ester. Pearls may be obtained by effecting polymerization of the monomer solution in an aqueous suspension. Catalysts may be used e.g. dibenzoyl peroxide; azo-bis-isobutyric acid nitrile, dilauroyl peroxide, diacetyl peroxide and tert-butyl-perbenzoate. Redox systems may also be used. Alternatively the initiation may be by heat treatment or irradiations. In the examples styrene and divinyl benzene (containing ethyl-styrene) in white spirit, dodecanol or diphenyl ether are dispersed in (a) an aqueous phase consisting of water containing magnesium silicate suspension or in (b) a 5% aqueous magnesium hydroxide suspension or in (c) methyl cellulose in water, and polymerization is commenced using as catalyst dibenzoyl peroxide, azo-bis-isobutyric acid nitrile and dibenzoyl peroxide respectively. The polymers are then chloromethylated and aminated. Specification 885,719 also is referred to. |
