titleOfInvention A process for coating articles with cold-hardening reaction lacquers based on esters of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid
abstract Polyacrylates and/or polymethacrylates are formed on a substrate by forming a syrupy solution comprising at least one polymeric ester of acrylic and/or methacrylic acids in at least one monomeric ester of acrylic and/or methacrylic acids, dividing said syrupy solution into two parts, mixing a diacyl peroxide with one part and a tertiary amine containing at least one aromatic radical bonded directly to the nitrogen atom with the other part and the two parts are applied successively to the substrate on which complete polymerization occurs. Esters mentioned are methyl, ethyl, butyl, ethyl hexyl and allyl methacrylates, and ethyl, butyl and ethyl hexyl acrylates, peroxides mentioned are benzoyl peroxide and 4,41-p-chlorobenzoyl peroxide; and tertiary amines mentioned are N-alkylolamines and N,N1-dialkylolamines, e.g. diethylol-p-toluidine, di-n-butylol-p-toluidine and diisopropylol-p-toluidine, diethylaniline, dimethyl-p-toluidine and tetramethyl diamino diphenyl methane. The syrupy solution may be prepared with a catalyst (e.g. azodiisobutyronitrile) and a regulator or the regulator may be added to the portion containing the tertiary amine, the regulator being an ester of mercaptoacetic acid with a mono- or di-hydric alcohol or a mono- or a di-mercaptan (e.g. lauryl mercaptan, glycol-dimercaptoacetate, isooctylthioglycolate and octyl mercaptan). The diacyl peroxide is preferably used in the form of a paste with dimethyl, dibutyl and dioctyl phthalates. Plasticizers, dyestuffs, fillers, metal or metalloid oxides, ultra violet stabilizers and paraffin wax may be present.ALSO:Articles (e.g. of glass and beech wood) are coated (e.g. by pouring, casting or rolling) with cold-hardening lacquers by dividing a syrupy solution comprising at least one polymeric ester of acrylic and/or methacrylic acids in at least one monomeric ester of acrylic and/or methacrylic acids into two parts, mixing a diacyl peroxide with one part and a tertiary amine containing at least one aromatic radical bonded directly to the nitrogen atom with the other part and the two parts are applied successively to the surface to be coated. Esters mentioned are methyl, ethyl, butyl, ethyl hexyl and allyl methacrylates and ethyl, butyl and ethyl hexyl acrylates; peroxides mentioned are benzoyl peroxide and 4,41-p-chlorobenzoyl peroxide; and tertiary amines mentioned are N-alkylolamines and N,N1-dialkylolamines, e.g. diethylol-p-toluidine, di-n-butylol-p-toluidine and diisopropylol-p-toluidine, diethyl aniline, di-methyl-p-toluidine and tetramethyldiaminodiphenyl methane. The syrupy solution may be prepared with a catalyst (e.g. azodiisobutyronitrile) and a regulator or the regulator may be added to the portion containing the tertiary amine, the regulator being an ester of mercaptoacetic acid with a mono- or di-hydric alcohol or a mono- or a di-mercaptan (e.g. lauryl mercaptan, glycol dimercapto acetate, isooctyl thioglycolate and octylmercaptan). The diacyl peroxide is preferably used in the form of a paste with dimethyl, dibutyl and dioctyl phthalates. Plasticizers, dyestuffs, fillers, metal or metalloid oxides, ultra-violet stabilizers and paraffin wax may be present.
