titleOfInvention Anionic polymerization of styrene
abstract The invention comprises desolvated rubidium and cesium compounds of formula: <FORM:0967839/C1/1> in which M may be rubidium or cesium, the R groups are the same or different and are phenyl or alkyl phenyl containing 7-10 C atoms, R1 may be hydrogen, or alkyl group of 1-3 C atoms, or phenyl or alkyl phenyl as above. Compounds specified are triphenyl methyl rubidium and cesium, diphenyl methyl rubidium, tris-(paramethyl phenyl) methyl rubidium, bis-(para methyl phenyl) methyl cesium, 1,1,diphenyl ethyl cesium, 1,1,diphenyl butyl rubidium and 1,1,diphenyl pentyl rubidium. The compounds are generally prepared in polar solvents such as liquid ammonia tetrahydrofuran, dimethoxyethane, ethyl ether and dioxane, from which they are separated by heating at temperatures of at least 60 DEG C. Vacuum heating and temperatures of 150-180 DEG C. are also used.ALSO:The invention comprises a method for the production of isotactic styrene polymers by anionic polymerization in an aliphatic hydrocarbon medium in which styrene monomer is contacted with a desolvated polyphenyl methyl rubidium or polyphenyl methyl cesium catalyst at temperatures of -10 to 70 DEG C. under an inert atmosphere. The catalysts are freed from polar solvents by heating at temperatures above 60 DEG C. and the following are specified, triphenylmethyl rubidium, triphenylmethyl cesium, diphenylmethyl rubidium, tris-(paramethylphenyl) methyl rubidium, bis-(paramethylphenyl) methane cesium, 1,1-diphenylethane cesium, 1,1-diphenyl butane rubidium, and 1,1-diphenylpentane rubidium. Aliphatic hydrocarbon medium include hexane, pentane, isopentane, heptane, octane, isooctane and decane. Isotactic polystyrene is obtained from the polymerizate by using solvent extraction techniques.
